Is this sponge safe for fish and aquatic life?

Yes. It is inert polyurethane foam with no added dyes or plasticisers in the standard grade, and it is widely used as both mechanical and biological filter media.

How often should it be cleaned?

Rinse in used tank water every 2-4 weeks depending on bio-load. Avoid tap water for bio-media, as chlorine kills the bacteria colony.

Does it work as biological media as well?

Yes. The open structure provides a very large surface area per unit volume, which supports nitrifying bacteria colonies.
